How to get cited by ChatGPT: what OpenAI says and what works for B2B SaaS
Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, answer the question in your first 50 words, and get named on the third-party lists, reviews and posts ChatGPT already cites. Placement is not guaranteed.
To get cited by ChatGPT, make your pages reachable by OpenAI's search crawler, put a clear answer at the top of each page, and get named on the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites: "best X" lists, reviews, LinkedIn and community threads. Then check your buyers' questions every month. OpenAI decides what it shows, and says placement is not guaranteed.
This post is for B2B SaaS teams. It covers what OpenAI says about how ChatGPT picks sources, what independent studies found, the technical checks, page structure, off-site work, measurement and what does not work. "How to rank in ChatGPT" is the same question: ChatGPT has no fixed rankings, only answers that cite a few pages. It is part of our guide to LLM SEO.
How does ChatGPT pick the sources it cites?
OpenAI says little about this, and what it says is short. Its help page on searching the web with ChatGPT (read 1 November 2026) states: "ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed." It does not list the factors.
The same page explains one step that matters a lot. ChatGPT does not always search for your exact words. When it uses outside search providers, it "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" and may send more specific follow-up queries after it reviews the first results. This is often called query fan-out. A page can be cited for a search the buyer never typed.
ChatGPT also does not search every time. It "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information", OpenAI writes. When it doesn't search, it answers from what the model learned in training, and there are no live AI citations to win.
What independent studies found
ChatGPT cites few pages. In Prefer's September 2026 study of 960 answers, ChatGPT averaged 3.05 sources per answer. Perplexity averaged 19.48, Gemini 8.64 and Claude 4.58. These were API answers, which can differ from the ChatGPT app.
ChatGPT often skips search. In Prefer's July 2026 test, ChatGPT skipped live web search on 29 of its 47 answers and replied from memory.
Answers change from run to run. Two runs of the same question shared 37% of cited sites on ChatGPT in Prefer's September study, against 96% on Perplexity.
Third-party pages win on category questions.Foundation and AirOps found that only 2.24% of AI citations on category questions went to the brand's own pages (5.1 million responses, 50 B2B brands, five AI platforms together).
Lists lead. Prefer found that 40% of the sources AI assistants cited for buyer questions were independent lists. Vendors' own sites got 34%, review sites 3%. For ChatGPT alone, 23% of citations went to vendors' own sites (July 2026, 188 answers, one day).
What this means: with about three sources per answer, each cited page carries weight. Most of those pages are not yours. You need to be on the pages ChatGPT picks, not only on your own site.
2.24%
of AI citations on category questions went to the brand's own pages. The rest went to pages it doesn't own.
This is the one step OpenAI spells out. Its help page says: "To make a website eligible for inclusion, allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site and confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses."
OpenAI runs separate bots for separate jobs (OpenAI crawlers, read 1 November 2026):
OAI-SearchBot "is for search". Sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."
GPTBot is for training. Blocking it says your content should not be used to train OpenAI's models. It does not remove you from search.
ChatGPT-User visits a page when a person's request needs it. OpenAI says it is not used to decide whether content can appear in search.
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and make sure no rule blocks OAI-SearchBot, by name or through "User-agent: *" with "Disallow: /". See robots.txt.
Check your firewall, CDN and bot protection. They can block OpenAI even when robots.txt allows it. OpenAI publishes its IP ranges at openai.com/searchbot.json.
Wait. OpenAI says it "can take ~24 hours from a site's robots.txt update" for its systems to adjust.
Look for OAI-SearchBot in your server logs to confirm it reaches your key pages.
Serve the main text in the HTML. In its note on offline web search for workspaces, OpenAI lists common reasons a page is missing from its index: robots.txt blocks, CDN or bot blocking, login walls, content that depends on scripts, new or rarely visited pages, and deep pages that are hard to discover.
Does ChatGPT use Bing?
OpenAI does not say which index it uses. Its help page says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers" and points to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy statements for how those providers handle queries. It also has its own index and cache. Many SEO guides say ChatGPT relies on Bing; that is reported, not confirmed by OpenAI.
OpenAI gives no writing rules. What studies show is that ChatGPT retrieves pages for several rewritten queries and quotes a few of them. Pages that answer one question clearly are easier to quote. In practice, for each key page:
Answer first. Put a direct answer in the first 40 to 60 words, one that makes sense when quoted alone. This is answer-first content.
Ask the buyer's question in the heading. "How much does X cost?" beats "Pricing philosophy".
Use tables for comparisons and prices. State plan names, prices and limits in text, not only in images.
Say who it is for. "For B2B SaaS teams with 50 to 500 staff" makes the page a clear answer to a narrower, rewritten query.
Date your facts. Write "checked 1 November 2026" next to prices and numbers, and link the source.
Keep pricing, docs and comparison pages public. A page behind a login or a form cannot be cited.
Ahrefs found that only 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appeared in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. For ChatGPT, about 8% of in-text citations were in Google's or Bing's top 10 (Ahrefs, 15,000 queries, published August 2025). Ahrefs points to query fan-out as the likely reason. A page that answers a narrow version of the question well can be cited without ranking first for the broad one.
Why do third-party lists matter so much?
Take a made-up example. A buyer asks ChatGPT "best webinar software for B2B lead generation". If it searches, it reads a few pages and writes a shortlist. If two of those pages are comparison articles, the tools named in them are the ones it can name. A tool missing from both is less likely to make the answer. Prefer's 40% figure for independent lists fits this pattern.
40%
of the sources AI assistants cited for buyer questions were independent lists. Vendors' own sites got 34%, review sites 3%.
Earn it. Find the lists ChatGPT cites for your category (ask it your buyers' questions and open the sources). Write to each author with what you do, who it is for, your pricing and a free trial or demo they can test. Free, slow and not guaranteed.
Get reviewed. Offer the publisher a real test account and answer their questions fast, so they can update their article with facts they checked.
Pay for a spot, with disclosure. Some publishers sell positions in their listicles. Ask for a clear label and rel="sponsored" on the link. Our guide to listicle placements covers how this works and what it costs.
Rank Monthly is one way to do the third route: it books businesses into the listicles, newsletters and LinkedIn creator posts that buyers read and AI assistants quote, and keeps them there. Brands pay monthly, only while the spot is live, and payment is held until the placement is verified live. The sponsored label and rel="sponsored" are on by default, and each publisher decides whether to keep them. Being on a list does not guarantee a ChatGPT citation: OpenAI decides. Pricing on request. See how it works for businesses.
Do reviews, Reddit and LinkedIn help?
They can, because ChatGPT cites them. The evidence by source:
Where ChatGPT citations come from: what studies found
Source type
What the study found
Study
LinkedIn
Cited in 14.3% of ChatGPT Search responses; individual members made up 59% of those LinkedIn citations
Each study used its own questions, engines and method, so the numbers are not comparable with each other. All sources read 1 November 2026.
LinkedIn: posts from real people get cited more than company pages in ChatGPT, per Semrush. Have your founder and experts post useful, specific answers to buyer questions.
Reddit and communities: answer real threads as yourself, say who you are, and help even when your product is not the answer. See Reddit SEO.
**Review sites:** they got a small share of citations in Prefer's test. A profile with honest reviews still helps buyers who check, so keep it current, but don't expect it to carry ChatGPT on its own.
How do you measure whether ChatGPT cites you?
Write 20 to 50 buyer questions. Use the words buyers use: "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "X alternatives", "how much does X cost".
Ask each question at least three times a month. Answers change from run to run (37% overlap on ChatGPT in Prefer's study), so one run says little.
Record four things: are you named, are you linked, is the description right, and which pages did ChatGPT cite.
Turn the cited pages into a target list. A cited list that doesn't name you is an outreach target. A wrong description means fixing the page ChatGPT used.
Check your logs and analytics. Look for OAI-SearchBot visits and for visits that came from ChatGPT.
Blocking OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says blocked sites will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Check that a security tool hasn't done it for you.
Buying ChatGPT ads to get into the answer. OpenAI says ads are kept "clearly separate from ChatGPT's answers" (OpenAI, May 2026). An ad is not a citation.
Counting on your own "best X" list. It can still help readers, but brand-owned pages got 2.24% of citations on category questions in the Foundation study.
Expecting llms.txt to do the work. The OpenAI pages we read today don't mention llms.txt. It is fine as hygiene, not as a lever.
Fake reviews and undisclosed posts. They break platform rules and can get removed, and the people who read them are your buyers.
Anyone who promises a ChatGPT citation or a "ranking". OpenAI writes that placement is not guaranteed. Nobody outside OpenAI controls it.
One more number explains why this work is worth it: G2's 2026 survey found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google (1,076 B2B decision-makers). For how ChatGPT fits next to Google, see SEO vs GEO vs AEO.
Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and in your CDN, put a clear answer in the first 50 words of each key page, and get named on the third-party lists, reviews and LinkedIn posts ChatGPT already cites for your buyers' questions. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed, so check the results each month.
Does ChatGPT use Bing to find sources?
OpenAI does not say. Its help page says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and points to Microsoft's privacy statement, and OpenAI also keeps its own index. Many SEO guides say Bing; that is reported, not confirmed. Registering in Bing Webmaster Tools is cheap and worth doing anyway.
Can you rank first in ChatGPT?
Not in the way you rank in Google. ChatGPT writes an answer and cites a few pages, about three on average in Prefer's September 2026 study, and the cited pages change from run to run. The aim is to be on the pages it picks for your buyers' questions, not a fixed position.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing me?
No. OpenAI says GPTBot is for training its models and OAI-SearchBot is for search. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what keeps a site out of ChatGPT search answers.
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
There is no fixed time. OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to apply. Getting named on third-party lists depends on when publishers update their articles, which can take weeks or months. Track your questions monthly to see changes.
SE Ranking, Semrush and Ahrefs track Google AI Overviews by keyword inside an SEO suite. Peec AI and Otterly.AI add prompts. Nine trackers checked on their own sites, plus free ways to check.
ChatGPT ads are paid, labeled units below some answers for Free and Go users, billed per 1,000 views or per click. OpenAI says ads never change the answer itself.
G2 reviews help, but they are no direct line into ChatGPT. g2.com is often cited, yet review sites got 3% of AI citations in one study, lists 40%. Keep reviews honest, and get into the lists.
