What does Reddit SEO mean?

Reddit SEO has no official definition. Neither Reddit nor Google uses the term in the pages we read. People use it for two things:

  • Showing up in Reddit threads that rank in Google for your buyers' questions.
  • Being named in threads that AI assistants read and cite when they answer those questions.

A few guides also use it for ranking inside Reddit's own search. For B2B SaaS, the first two matter most. The goal is a fair brand mention in a thread buyers trust, not a link.

Why does Reddit matter for B2B SaaS?

Google can read Reddit fast. Since 22 February 2024, Google has had access to "Reddit's Data API, which delivers real-time, structured, unique content" (Google, read 1 November 2026).

AI assistants cite Reddit, but how much depends on the engine and the topic. Two studies show the range:

  • In Prefer's September 2026 study of 960 answers to 80 questions about AI search, GEO and AEO, Reddit was cited in 207 answers (21.6%), more than any other site. Perplexity cited it in 40.8% of its answers, Gemini 38.8%, ChatGPT 6.7% and Claude in none.
  • In Prefer's July 2026 test of 188 answers to B2B buyer questions, Reddit and forums got 4% of citations. Independent lists got 40%. Reddit was still the most-cited single site (43 citations), and Perplexity produced 37 of them.

So the studies disagree on size. They agree that Perplexity leans on Reddit most, and Claude did not cite it in either study. Both are one sample on one day.

How do you do Reddit SEO?

  1. List the questions buyers ask before they buy, such as "best help desk for a 10-person team".
  2. Search Google for each question plus "reddit". Ask the same question in Perplexity and Gemini and note which threads they cite.
  3. Read each community's rules before you post. Many communities limit self-promotion.
  4. Answer the question first. Name your product only where it fits, and say that you work there.
  5. Name other tools when they fit the person better. Honest answers get upvoted and quoted.
  6. Check the same threads and answers every month. Results move slowly.

Do not buy upvotes or post as a fake customer. Moderators and readers spot it, and it can get the account banned.

What does Reddit SEO look like? (example)

A hypothetical example: the founder of a scheduling tool for clinics finds a thread called "Best booking software for a small physio practice". Perplexity cites it for that question. She replies with three options for different needs, including her own. She says she is the founder and where her tool falls short. Six months later the thread still ranks, and her reply is one of the top answers.

How does Reddit SEO relate to other terms?

  • Search everywhere optimization is the wider idea: be found on every platform buyers search, and Reddit is one of them.
  • An AI citation is a link to a source in an AI answer. A Reddit thread can be that source.
  • Third-party lists still get more citations than Reddit for buyer questions in the July study. Reddit adds to lists; it does not replace them.
