What is an AI citation?
When an assistant searches the web before it answers, it can point to the pages it used. That pointer is the citation: a numbered link, a source card or a link under the answer. Perplexity says "Each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources" (Perplexity, read 1 November 2026). Anthropic's docs say citations "are always enabled" for Claude's web search, with the URL, the title and up to 150 characters of cited text (Claude docs). OpenAI's API includes inline citations for web search results by default (OpenAI).
The phrase has a second meaning: how to cite ChatGPT or another AI tool in an academic paper. This entry is about the first meaning, the sources shown in AI answers.
What is the difference between a citation and a mention?
A citation links to a page. A brand mention names your brand in the answer text. The two often come apart. Your page can be cited in an answer that recommends a competitor, and your brand can be named because a third-party list about you was cited. OpenAI's docs add one more layer: the sources field "returns the complete list of URLs the model consulted", so it is often longer than the list of citations shown (OpenAI).
Why do AI citations matter for B2B SaaS?
G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google.
When Prefer checked 188 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude in July 2026, 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists. Vendors' own sites got 34%, review sites 3%.
Being cited may also go with more clicks. Seer Interactive found that brands cited in Google's AI Overview got 120% more organic clicks per impression than brands that were not cited, across 53 brands. Seer says this is a correlation, not proof of cause.
How do AI assistants choose what to cite?
No vendor publishes the full rules. What they do say: Google states there are "no additional requirements" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, and that both features may use query fan-out, running several related searches (Google Search Central, last updated 10 December 2025). Microsoft calls the retrieval step grounding: "Grounding determines which pages are retrieved, referenced, and cited when AI generates responses" (Microsoft Advertising, 23 March 2026).
Citations also differ a lot between engines. In Prefer's study of 960 answers, 72.7% of cited sites were cited by only one of the four engines, and 2.2% by all four. Perplexity averaged 19.48 sources per answer, ChatGPT 3.05.
How can you see your AI citations?
- Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, in public preview. Its Total Citations metric "Shows the total number of citations that are displayed as sources in AI-generated answers", across Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partners (Bing, 10 February 2026).
- Google Search Console counts traffic from AI features inside the normal Web search type. Google does not report citations as a separate number (Google).
- AI visibility tools run a set of prompts and record which pages get cited, often as citation share. See the best AI visibility tools.
What does an AI citation look like? (hypothetical example)
This example is hypothetical. A buyer asks Perplexity for the best onboarding tools for SaaS. The answer names four tools and shows six numbered citations: two review-site lists, one vendor's pricing page, a Reddit thread and two blog lists. A tool named in both blog lists appears in the answer, even though its own site is not cited. It got the mention through someone else's page.
How do AI citations connect to third-party lists?
Because so many cited sources are independent lists, being in the right lists is one of the few levers a brand has. Rank Monthly books businesses into the listicles that buyers read and AI assistants quote; what an assistant cites is still up to the assistant. The LLM SEO guide covers the other routes, including earning a spot for free.
