G2 reviews and AI visibility: does G2 get your SaaS into ChatGPT answers?

G2 reviews help, but they are no direct line into ChatGPT. g2.com is often cited, yet review sites got 3% of AI citations in one study, lists 40%. Keep reviews honest, and get into the lists.

G2 reviews can help a SaaS brand show up in AI answers, but they are not a direct line into ChatGPT. Assistants do cite G2: g2.com was the fourth most-cited site in Prefer's July 2026 study. Yet review sites as a group got only 3% of its citations, and independent lists got 40%. Treat G2 as one source among several, and keep your reviews honest and recent.

Below: what G2 itself says, what four independent studies measured, what G2 and Capterra offer vendors, G2's own rules for asking for reviews, and a short plan. It is part of our guide to LLM SEO: how B2B SaaS brands get named in AI answers.

Does ChatGPT use G2 reviews?

ChatGPT and other assistants cite G2 pages when they search the web for an answer. That is visible in every study below. What is not public is how much weight any engine gives G2 data. We found no page from OpenAI, Google, Perplexity or Anthropic that says it uses G2 reviews in its answers. So we don't claim it.

G2 makes its own claims. Its About page says "G2 has become the most-cited B2B software source across those AI-first channels where software discovery happens" (read 1 November 2026). The page shows no data for that line. In a September 2025 announcement, G2 said it ranks "4th among the top 10 cited sources on ChatGPT and 9th on Perplexity", and linked to a Profound study for its "most cited" claim.

Assistants cite a page when it helps answer the question, a process called grounding. A G2 category page with many recent reviews is a good fit for "best X software" questions. That is why G2 shows up. It does not mean a review score feeds straight into the answer.

What does G2's own research say about review sites and AI?

G2 surveyed 1,076 B2B decision-makers in March 2026 for The Answer Economy. It found that 51% now start their software research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google.

Three more findings from the same report matter here:

  • "45% of B2B software buyers say review site citations are the most confidence-inspiring signal in an AI answer."
  • Asked what shapes their shortlist, buyers named AI chatbots (54%) first and software review sites (43%) second.
  • "85% think more highly of a vendor cited by AI in its answer."

Keep in mind who wrote it. G2 sells review programs and AI visibility tools, and the report promotes them. The survey measures what buyers say they trust. It does not measure what the assistants cite. For that, you need studies that log real answers.

How often do AI assistants cite review sites?

Less often than G2's marketing suggests, and more often than zero. Four studies logged real AI answers and counted the sources. They used different questions, engines and dates, so the numbers don't line up exactly. They do point the same way.

Each study read at its source on 1 November 2026. Prefer, Profound and Growfusely sell AI visibility software or services; Overthink Group is an agency. Methods differ, so compare the direction, not the decimals.

The pattern: G2 is one of the most-cited single sites for software questions, often in the top five. But review sites as a group are a small slice, roughly 3% to 9% of citations in the three studies that grouped them. Most citations go to pages that write about a category: lists, media, blogs and the vendors' own pages.

Engines also differ. In Overthink's data, Perplexity drove most of G2's citations. In Prefer's study, g2.com was one of only 5 domains, out of 713, that all four engines cited. So a G2 profile can show up across engines, but how often depends on the engine. Track each one separately; see prompt tracking.

Review sites or lists: which matter more as AI sources?

Lists, by share. In Prefer's study, independent lists got 40% of citations and review sites 3%. That is the gap behind our work on listicle placements.

But the two do different jobs. A software review site covers every vendor in a category and shows ratings from many users. A best-of list is one writer's ranked pick of a few tools, with reasons. Assistants use lists to build a shortlist. Buyers then check that shortlist on review sites, as G2's survey suggests. You want to be present in both.

What do G2 and Capterra offer vendors?

G2 said on 29 January 2026 that it had agreed to acquire Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp from Gartner. G2 says the combined network has "nearly 6 million verified customer reviews". Capterra's vendor page now says "Capterra, powered by G2 Digital Markets". So one company now runs four large review sites.

Where G2 is stronger than most routes: the free profile costs nothing, buyers already check it, and the reviews belong to your users, not to a publisher who could remove you. Where it is weaker for AI answers: it is one source, and the studies above show lists and editorial pages get more of the citations.

How do you get honest G2 reviews without breaking the rules?

Ask every customer, reward the effort and never the opinion. G2's community guidelines (read 1 November 2026) list what vendors may not do. It calls this "biased review collection":

  • "collecting reviews by any method that segments out potentially negative reviews or exclusively targets positive reviews"
  • "conditioning incentives on reviews being positive"
  • "independently incentivizing reviewers without disclosing those incentives to G2"
  • "discouraging negative reviews of your product or service"

G2 also says it "limits the value of any incentive offered in exchange for a review to $100 USD", that incentivized reviews are tagged, and that employees of the vendor or a direct competitor may not review. If G2 finds a seller "soliciting only positive reviews, we will remove the reviews." It can also add a warning banner to the profile or ban the vendor.

Capterra's rules (last updated 4 May 2026) are close. Vendors must tell reviewers that "Incentives are not contingent on submitting a positive review; honest and unbiased feedback is required." In the US, the FTC's rule on consumer reviews (16 CFR Part 465) bans paying for reviews "expressing a particular sentiment, whether positive or negative" (§ 465.4, read 1 November 2026). This is our reading of the rules, not legal advice.

A clean process looks like this:

  1. Claim your free G2 profile. Fill in the category, pricing, screenshots and a plain description that matches your own site.
  2. Pick a moment that fits every customer, such as 60 days after onboarding. Send the same request to all of them, happy or not.
  3. If you offer a thank-you, offer it to everyone, keep it under G2's $100 cap and use G2's own campaign tools so it is disclosed.
  4. Ask for detail, not stars: the problem it solved and which other tools they looked at. G2's survey found some marketers coaching customers this way after seeing AI pull from review sites.
  5. Reply in public to critical reviews. Never ask a reviewer to change a rating.
  6. Repeat every quarter. Recent reviews matter: G2's own AI dashboard guidance names "increasing recent reviews".

What should a B2B SaaS team do about G2 and AI visibility?

Start with the free work, then measure before you pay. Here is the order we would use:

  1. Run your buyer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, three times each. Note which pages they cite. Our AI visibility audit shows how.
  2. If G2 pages show up for your category, make your G2 profile complete and keep reviews coming in, honestly.
  3. If lists show up more (they did in most of the studies above), find the cited list articles and get into them: pitch the writer, or book a spot where the publisher sells one.
  4. Check the facts each source states about you: pricing, category, features. A wrong line on a cited page can become a wrong line in the answer. See hallucination.
  5. Track it monthly with a tool from our list of AI visibility tools, or by hand.

Rank Monthly works on the list side. It books businesses into the list articles, newsletters and LinkedIn creator posts that buyers read and AI assistants quote, and keeps them there month by month. It does not collect reviews and it is not a G2 alternative. Google and the assistants decide what they cite. Pricing on request; see for businesses.

Questions

Do G2 reviews help you show up in ChatGPT?
They can help, but they are one source among many. AI assistants do cite G2: g2.com was the fourth most-cited site in Prefer's July 2026 study of 188 answers. But review sites as a group got 3% of citations there, against 40% for independent lists. No engine says publicly how much weight it gives G2 reviews.
How often do AI assistants cite G2?
In the studies we read on 1 November 2026, G2 was often a top-five single domain for software questions. Overthink Group found g2.com was the most-cited domain at 5.8% of citations, with more than 71% of them from Perplexity. Profound found G2 at 1.1% of all ChatGPT citations across all topics.
Can I pay customers for G2 reviews?
You can offer a thank-you, within G2's rules. G2 caps incentives at $100 per review, tags incentivized reviews and forbids tying the reward to a positive rating or asking only happy customers. In the US, the FTC's rule (16 CFR Part 465) bans paying for reviews with a particular sentiment. This is not legal advice.
Is G2 or Capterra better for AI visibility?
They now sit in one group. G2 agreed to acquire Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp from Gartner in January 2026, and Capterra now calls itself "powered by G2 Digital Markets". Overthink Group counted G2's network at 8.0% of AI citations. Check which of the sites the assistants cite for your own category before you choose where to spend.
Are review sites or list articles more important for AI answers?
By share of citations, list articles. Prefer's July 2026 study found independent lists got 40% of AI citations and review sites 3%. Growfusely found all review sites together at 7.3%. Review sites still matter because buyers use them to check a shortlist, so a good plan covers both.
