What does citation share mean?

Bing gives the clearest public definition. Its Citation Share is "the percentage of citations attributed to your site" out of "all citations shown across all sites for that same grounding query" (Bing, 16 June 2026, read 1 November 2026). Bing calls it "an observational metric" that is "not a ranking system or a competitive scoreboard". It does not show competitor domains or your share of traffic.

AI visibility trackers use the same name for their own data: they count the citations in answers to the prompts you track and divide yours by the total. Each tool picks its own prompts, engines and counting rules, so check how yours counts before you compare numbers.

How do you calculate citation share?

  1. Pick a fixed set of prompts or queries that buyers ask.
  2. Collect the answers, with several runs per prompt, because answers vary.
  3. Count every citation in those answers.
  4. Count the citations that point to your domain.
  5. Divide your count by the total and multiply by 100.

Decide two rules up front and keep them: whether a URL cited twice in one answer counts once or twice, and whether you count only your domain or also third-party pages about you.

What does citation share look like? (hypothetical example)

This example is hypothetical. You track 40 prompts, three runs each: 120 answers with 600 citations in total. 30 citations point to your site, so your citation share is 5%. A review site gets 90 citations, or 15%. Your brand can still be named in many more answers than that, because the lists that mention you are the pages being cited.

Why does citation share matter for B2B SaaS?

It shows who owns the sources behind the answers in your category. In the Foundation and AirOps study of 5.1 million AI responses for 50 B2B brands, the brand's own pages held 2.24% of citations on category questions that did not name the brand, and 30.7% on questions that did (the second figure is from the study's chart caption).

So on category questions your own share is likely to be small, and the useful part of the report is who holds the rest: lists, review sites, forums and media. Those are the pages to earn a place on.

Citation share vs share of voice

  • Citation share counts links to pages. It answers: whose pages does the assistant use? See AI citation.
  • AI share of voice counts brand names in the answer text. Peec AI, for example, divides your brand mentions by all brand mentions (Peec AI docs).
  • Share of voice is the older marketing idea both come from: your part of all the attention in a market.
  • An AI visibility score usually rolls mentions, and sometimes citations, into one number.

What are the limits of citation share?

  • Answers also change from run to run. In Prefer's study of 960 answers (measured 13 September 2026), two runs of the same question overlapped by 37% in the sites they cited on ChatGPT and 35% on Gemini, against 96% on Perplexity.
  • Bing warns that citation activity can be influenced by "evolving AI models, competing content, freshness signals, and shifts in user demand" (Bing).
  • A citation is not a click. Neither Bing's report nor most trackers tell you who saw the answer.
