What makes a list a best-of list?
A best-of list is a listicle that ranks or picks the best options for one need: "Best help desk software for small teams", "Best payroll tools for startups in 2026". A good one says who each option is for and why it made the cut.
Why do best-of lists matter for B2B SaaS?
They sit where buyers make their shortlist, and AI assistants use them as sources.
G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google.
When Prefer checked 188 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude in July 2026, 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists. Vendors' own sites got 34%, review sites 3%.
If your product is missing from the lists that answer your category's questions, a buyer can miss you twice: on the page and in the AI answer built from it.
What does a good best-of list look like? (example)
A hypothetical "Best expense software for startups (2026)":
- A two-sentence answer: the top pick and who it suits.
- How the tools were chosen and tested.
- A comparison table: price, best for, key limit.
- One section per tool: strengths, limits and why it is on the list.
- A disclosure for paid entries and affiliate links, near the list.
- The date of the last update.
Google's review guidance asks the same: "When recommending something as the best overall or the best for a certain purpose, include why you consider it the best," and "Explain what sets something apart from its competitors" (Google Search Central, last updated 2025-12-10, read 1 November 2026).
How do you judge a best-of list before you pay for a spot?
- Does the page get visits, measured and not claimed?
- Does it show up for the question it answers?
- Does each entry explain why it is there?
- Is it updated, with a visible date?
- Are paid entries labeled?
How Rank Monthly handles best-of lists
Publishers on Rank Monthly connect Search Console, Analytics and WordPress, so every number is measured, never typed in. Brands can filter by topic, site strength and rating. One ledger shows every placement, page visit, click and AI mention, month by month, with what was paid. Google and the AI assistants decide where a list ranks and whether it is quoted; nobody can promise that.
Common confusions
- Every best-of list is a listicle; not every listicle is a best-of list.
- A best-of list is not a review site's category page, where every vendor is listed and sorted by ratings.
- A best-of list is not an "X vs Y" page, which compares two products in depth.
- A best-of list with paid entries is a sponsored listicle. See also paid placement.
