What does AI visibility mean?
AI visibility is the result that generative engine optimization and AI SEO aim for. It has three parts:
- Named: the answer mentions your brand.
- Described correctly: what it says about you is true and current.
- Linked: the answer cites one of your pages, or a page that names you. See AI citation.
There is no single standard for the number. Each tracking tool counts it in its own way, and many turn it into an AI visibility score.
Why does AI visibility matter for B2B SaaS?
G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google. An assistant usually names a few tools, not ten pages of results. Being one of the few is the point.
How do you measure AI visibility?
The common method is prompt tracking:
- Write a fixed set of questions your buyers ask, such as "best invoicing software for agencies".
- Ask each question on each assistant, several times.
- Record per answer: named or not, described correctly or not, linked or not, and which sources the answer used.
- Report it as "named in X of Y answers" per assistant, and compare with competitors. That comparison is your AI share of voice.
- Repeat every month with the same questions.
Repeat runs matter. In Prefer's September 2026 study of 960 answers, two runs of the same question shared 96% of cited sites on Perplexity, 68% on Claude, 37% on ChatGPT and 35% on Gemini.
The search engines now report part of this in their own webmaster tools. Bing's AI Performance report shows "the total number of citations that are displayed as sources in AI-generated answers" across Copilot and Bing's AI summaries (Bing Webmaster Blog, February 2026). Google points to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console (Google Search Central, read 1 November 2026). Both report on your own site's pages, not on mentions of you on other sites. What does AI visibility look like? (hypothetical example)
A hypothetical example: an accounting software company tracks 20 questions on four assistants, three runs each: 240 answers. It is named in 48 of them (20%). Its main competitor is named in 110. Most answers that name the competitor cite two comparison lists where the company is missing. That tells the team where to work next.
How does AI visibility connect to third-party lists?
Most of your visibility is earned on pages you don't own. Foundation and AirOps found that on unbranded questions only 2.24% of AI citations went to the brand's own pages (5.1 million responses, 50 brands). Prefer found independent lists were 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions in July 2026. Rank Monthly's ledger records AI mentions month by month next to each paid list placement, but Google and the assistants decide what they cite.
