What does share of voice mean?

Share of voice started in advertising. Wikipedia describes it as calculated by "taking your advertising spend and dividing it by the total of all market advertising spend" in the same category, so a brand spending $5 million in a $100 million category has a 5% share (Wikipedia, read 1 November 2026).

The idea has spread to other channels. The formula stays the same (your count divided by the total, times 100). What changes is what you count.

Paid searchAd impressionsGoogle's impression share is "impressions / total eligible impressions": your share of what you could get, not a share against competitors (Google Ads Help)

Why does share of voice matter for B2B SaaS?

Share of voice is relative. 100 mentions a month means little on its own. Compared with your three closest competitors, it tells you whether buyers see you more or less often than the alternatives.

The channel that matters is moving. G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google. If buyers shortlist inside AI answers, your share of those answers is a share of the shortlist.

How do you calculate share of voice?

  1. Pick one channel and a fixed set of competitors.
  2. Pick what you count: spend, impressions, mentions or citations.
  3. Collect the counts for you and each competitor over the same period.
  4. Divide your count by the total for all of you, then multiply by 100.
  5. Repeat with the same channel, competitors and period length every month.

What does share of voice look like? (hypothetical example)

This example is hypothetical. A B2B SaaS company tracks AI answers to its buyers' questions for one month. It is named 30 times. Three competitors are named 50, 15 and 5 times. Total: 100 mentions, so its share of voice in AI answers is 30%. In the same month its share of category ad spend is 10%. The two numbers measure different channels, so neither is wrong.

  • AI share of voice is share of voice measured in AI answers, usually by counting brand mentions.
  • Citation share counts links to your pages, not your name.
  • A brand mention is the unit many tools count.
  • Share of market is your share of sales. Share of voice measures attention, not sales.

The short form "SOV" has many unrelated meanings, so spell it out the first time. For how B2B SaaS brands grow their share in AI answers, read the LLM SEO guide.
