What is a brand mention?
A brand mention is your name in someone else's words. Marketers count three kinds:
- Linked mentions: a page names you and links to your site.
- Unlinked mentions: a page names you without a link.
- Mentions in AI answers: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Copilot names your product when it answers a question.
The first two are old SEO and PR ideas. The third is newer, and it is the one most B2B SaaS teams now ask about.
Why do brand mentions matter for B2B SaaS?
Buyers meet software in other people's content before they reach your site. When Prefer checked 188 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude in July 2026, 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists. Vendors' own sites got 34%, review sites 3%.
AI answers also name brands without citing their pages. Foundation and AirOps studied 5.1 million AI responses for 50 B2B brands. On unbranded questions, only 2.24% of citations went to the brand's own pages. The study adds that brands were often represented in the answers while their own content was absent from the cited sources (page last updated 30 July 2026, read 1 November 2026).
In short: what others write about you is a large part of what an assistant says about you.
Brand mention vs AI citation
- A mention is your name in the answer text.
- An AI citation is a source the answer links to. The cited page may be yours, or a list that names you.
- You can be mentioned without being cited, and your page can be cited for a fact in an answer that names a competitor.
- Studies and tools measure one or the other, and they give different numbers. Check which one a report counts.
How do you track brand mentions?
- Web mentions: set alerts for your brand and product names, and search for them with a date filter.
- AI mentions: run a fixed set of buyer questions through the assistants and record whether you are named. This is prompt tracking.
- Bing: the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows where your content is cited in AI-generated answers (Bing blog, 16 June 2026). It counts citations of your pages, not mentions of your name.
- Compare with competitors: your share of the mentions across the same questions is your AI share of voice.
How do brand mentions relate to co-citation?
Co-citation is when your brand is named next to others in the same piece, such as a "best X" list. A list that names you beside the known tools puts you on the shortlist that page offers. When an assistant cites that list, the shortlist goes with it.
This is why third-party lists matter so much for mentions. One accurate entry in a list that assistants read can show up in many answers, and an outdated one can repeat old facts about you. Rank Monthly books businesses into the listicles, newsletters and LinkedIn creator posts that buyers read and AI assistants quote, and records every placement, click and AI mention month by month. Google and the assistants decide what they show.
What does this look like? (hypothetical example)
A hypothetical HR software company asks four assistants "best onboarding software for remote teams", three times each. It is named in 5 of the 12 answers, but its own site is never cited. The cited sources are two list articles that name it and one Reddit thread. Its mentions come from those pages. The work is to keep those entries accurate and to get into the lists that leave it out.
