What does AEO mean?
AEO aims at the answer, not the list of links. An answer engine is a system that replies to a question with an answer, often written by AI, instead of ten results to click.
Google names the term in its own guide: "'AEO' stands for 'answer engine optimization'". It adds that optimizing for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO" (Google Search Central, read 1 November 2026).
There is no agreed definition. Wikipedia treats AEO as another name for generative engine optimization and says usage has "no consensus definition" (Wikipedia, read 1 November 2026). Google's guide groups AEO and GEO together as terms for "work specifically focused on improving visibility in AI search experiences" (Google Search Central). Check what people mean when they say AEO.
Why does AEO matter for B2B SaaS?
Buyers get more answers without clicking. G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google. And when Google shows an AI Overview, Ahrefs found a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page (300,000 keywords, February 2026).
That is the zero-click search problem. If the answer is on the results page or in the chat, the brand named in that answer gets the attention. AEO is how you try to be that brand, or the page the answer cites.
How do you do AEO?
- Answer the question in the first 40 to 60 words of the page, in a sentence that makes sense on its own.
- Use headings phrased the way people ask, and one idea per section.
- Put comparisons in tables and processes in numbered steps.
- Keep the page indexable. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google Search Central).
- Don't block the search crawlers of the assistants. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI).
- Get your product explained on other people's pages too, because assistants quote them.
You can't pick yourself as the answer. Google says plainly that you can't mark a page as a featured snippet: its systems decide (Google Search Central).
What does AEO look like? (hypothetical example)
A hypothetical example: a help desk startup wants to be the answer to "what is a shared inbox". It rewrites its page so the first two sentences define the term. It adds a short table that compares a shared inbox with email forwarding and with a ticketing tool. It asks two review blogs to correct an outdated description of its product. Then it checks the question in Google and in three assistants every month.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO
- SEO gets your pages ranked in the list of results.
- AEO gets your content used as the direct answer.
- Generative engine optimization (GEO) gets your brand named in answers that AI writes. In 2026 many people use AEO and GEO for the same thing.
- AI SEO is a broader label for all of this work in AI-powered search.

How does AEO connect to third-party lists and AI citations?
The answer often comes from pages you don't own. When Prefer checked 188 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude in July 2026, 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists. Vendors' own sites got 34%. Foundation and AirOps found that on unbranded questions only 2.24% of citations went to the brand's own pages. So AEO for a software brand also means being described well in the lists and reviews that answers cite.
