What does answer engine mean?
An answer engine gives you the answer, not ten links to go and read. Today the best-known answer engines write that answer with AI and show their sources. Perplexity calls itself "the world's first answer engine" (read 1 November 2026).
The idea is older than AI chat. Wikipedia sends "answer engine" to its article on question answering, "a computer science discipline within the fields of information retrieval" and natural language processing (Wikipedia).
Is there one definition?
No. Sources use the term in different ways:
- Narrow: AI tools that search and write a cited answer, such as Perplexity and ChatGPT search.
- Wide: anything that answers directly, including voice assistants and Google's featured snippets.
We use the wide sense, because the work to get quoted is much the same for both.
Why do answer engines matter for B2B SaaS?
Fewer people click through. Ahrefs found a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page when Google shows an AI Overview (300,000 keywords, February 2026). That is zero-click search: the buyer gets the answer on the results page.
The answer also names brands. When Prefer checked 188 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude in July 2026, 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists. Vendors' own sites got 34%, review sites 3%. So being in the right lists is part of being in the answer.
How do you write for an answer engine?
- Answer the question in the first 40 to 60 words, in a way that can be quoted alone.
- Use headings phrased as the questions people ask.
- Put comparisons and prices in tables, and steps in numbered lists.
- Name your sources and dates, so the answer can be checked.
- Make sure the engines can crawl and index the page.
- Get named on the third-party pages that answer engines cite for your category.
What does that look like? (example)
A hypothetical example: a page titled "How long does SOC 2 take?" opens with "Most startups take three to twelve months, depending on the report type." An answer engine can lift that sentence as it is. A page that opens with a long story about compliance gives it nothing to quote.
Answer engine vs AI search engine vs AEO
- An AI search engine is the AI kind of answer engine. Today the two terms are often used as the same thing.
- Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your content used in those answers.
- A featured snippet is an early answer engine feature: Google quotes one page word for word.
