What does AI SEO mean?

The phrase has two meanings, and search results mix them:

Wikipedia lists AI SEO among several names for the first meaning, next to GEO, AEO and LLMO, and notes there is "no consensus definition" (Wikipedia, read 1 November 2026).

Is AI SEO different from normal SEO?

Google says mostly no. Its guide states that optimizing for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO" (Google Search Central, read 1 November 2026). It says you don't need special AI text files, special schema markup, or content cut into tiny pieces.

The differences are in reach and measurement. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run their own search crawlers, and each assistant picks different sources. And success is counted in answers that name you, not only in rankings.

Why does AI SEO matter for B2B SaaS?

G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google. A buyer who asks an assistant for the best tools in your category gets a short list. AI SEO is the work of being on it.

How do you do AI SEO?

  1. Start with search engine optimization (SEO): indexed pages, clear structure, useful content. Google's AI features need a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  2. Let the AI search crawlers in. PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" (Perplexity). Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce "your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results" (Anthropic).
  3. Answer the question first, then explain. Use tables for comparisons.
  4. Get described well on third-party pages: lists, reviews and community threads.
  5. Measure. Google has a Generative AI performance report in Search Console (Google Search Central). Bing's AI Performance report counts citations in Copilot and Bing's AI answers (Bing Webmaster Blog).

If you use AI to write the pages, Google's rule applies: "It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content" (Google Search Central, last updated 1 October 2026).

What does AI SEO look like? (hypothetical example)

A hypothetical example: an HR software company sees fewer clicks from Google on its guides. It checks Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and finds its pages are cited in some AI answers but not for its main product searches. It rewrites three product pages to answer first, removes a robots.txt rule that blocked an AI search crawler, and pitches two list articles that the assistants cite. It tracks the result monthly.

AI SEO vs GEO, AEO and LLMO

Think of AI SEO as the umbrella. GEO and AEO are the same goal with different names. LLM optimization puts the focus on the language models themselves. For the step-by-step version, read LLM SEO: how B2B SaaS brands get named in AI answers.

Where do third-party lists come in?

Assistants quote other people's pages more than yours. Prefer found that in July 2026, 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists and 34% were vendors' own sites. A good AI SEO plan includes the lists that rank and get cited for your category.
