What is an AI Overview?

An AI Overview is a short answer that Google writes with AI and shows above the normal results for some searches. Google says they "help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly" (Google Search Central, read 1 November 2026). Each one links to the pages it drew on.

Google started rolling them out "to everyone in the U.S." on 14 May 2024, with more countries later (Google). They do not show for every search.

How do AI Overviews pick their sources?

Google may use query fan-out: "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" to build the answer. A page can then appear as a supporting link if it is indexed and "eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google Search Central).

Google is clear that nothing extra is needed: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Normal SEO is the way in.

Why do AI Overviews matter for B2B SaaS?

They change who gets the click. Two studies point the same way:

  • Ahrefs found a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page when Google shows an AI Overview (300,000 keywords, February 2026).
  • Seer Interactive found 120% more organic clicks per impression for brands cited in the AI Overview than for brands that were not (53 brands, April 2026). That is a correlation, not proof of cause.

So ranking first is worth less than it was, and being one of the cited sources is worth more. This is part of zero-click search.

How do you show up in AI Overviews?

  1. Make sure the page is indexed and can show a snippet. Check it with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console.
  2. Answer the question in the first lines of the page, in plain words.
  3. Cover the follow-up questions a buyer would ask, since fan-out searches look for them.
  4. Get named on the third-party pages that rank for your category, such as "best X software" lists. AI Overviews can link to them.
  5. Watch Search Console. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the normal Performance report, within the "Web" search type.

To limit what Google shows from a page in Search, including AI features, Google points to `nosnippet`, `data-nosnippet`, `max-snippet` and `noindex`. These also limit your normal snippets.

What does an AI Overview look like? (example)

A hypothetical example: someone searches "how to reduce churn in a SaaS product". The AI Overview gives five short tips and links to three articles. One is a vendor blog, one is a guide on a marketing site, one is a list of churn tools. The vendor named in that list gets seen even though its own page ranks fifth.

  • Google AI Mode is a separate chat-style tab for longer questions with follow-ups. AI Overviews sit inside the normal results page.
  • A featured snippet quotes one page word for word. An AI Overview writes its own summary from several pages.
  • An AI citation is the link to a source inside the answer.
