What does AI visibility tracking measure?
- Mentions: how often answers name your brand, often as a share of answers or an AI visibility score.
- Share: your mentions against your competitors' mentions.
- Citations: which pages the answers link to, yours and everyone else's.
- Position and tone: where you appear in the answer and how you are described, in tools that report it.
- Visits: people who click through from an assistant, tracked as AI referral traffic in your analytics.
How does AI visibility tracking work?
- Write the prompts your buyers ask, in their words. This is prompt tracking.
- Pick the engines that matter to your buyers.
- Run each prompt several times on a fixed schedule.
- Record who is named, in what order, and which pages are cited.
- Compare with the same competitors each period, and review the sources you are missing from.
Tools collect answers in different ways: some read the consumer chat interface, others call the model's API. The difference matters. Prefer's study notes that its API answers can differ from the consumer apps (Prefer, read 1 November 2026). Answers also change from run to run. In Prefer's study of 960 answers (measured 13 September 2026), two runs of the same question overlapped by 37% in the sites they cited on ChatGPT and 35% on Gemini, against 96% on Perplexity.
What can you track without a paid tool?
- Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance shows how often your pages are cited across "Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations", with the grounding queries behind them (Bing, 10 February 2026). Since June 2026 it also shows Citation Share per grounding query (Bing).
- Google Search Console includes traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the normal Web search type. It is not split out (Google Search Central).
- Your own analytics show visits from assistants by referrer.
- Manual checks: run your key prompts by hand each month and save the answers with the date.
Why does AI visibility tracking matter for B2B SaaS?
G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers found that 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google.
Tracking shows where those answers come from. Foundation and AirOps looked at 5.1 million AI responses for 50 B2B brands. On category questions that did not name the brand, only 2.24% of citations went to the brand's own pages. So the useful output is often a list of third-party pages that shape your category's answers and do not name you yet.
What does AI visibility tracking look like? (hypothetical example)
This example is hypothetical. A SaaS team tracks 60 prompts on four engines, three runs each, once a month. In October it is named in 18% of answers. One review blog's list is cited in 40 answers and does not include the product. That list goes to the top of the outreach plan. In November the team checks whether the list changed and whether its share moved.
What are the limits of AI visibility tracking?
- It measures; it does not change what assistants say. That depends on the pages they read.
- Prompt sets are samples. Real buyers ask in many more ways.
- Counts are not rankings. Bing says its page-level data "reflects how often pages are cited, not page importance, ranking, or placement" (Bing).
