What is an AI search engine?
A classic search engine returns ten blue links. An AI search engine reads pages for you and writes the answer, then shows the pages it used. Microsoft describes its version as one that "cites its sources prominently, so you know exactly where the information came from" (Microsoft Bing, read 1 November 2026).
Which AI search engines are there?
| What it is | How a site gets in | |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | AI answers inside Google Search | Indexed and eligible for a snippet; "no additional requirements" (Google) |
| ChatGPT search | Web search inside ChatGPT | Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt (OpenAI) |
| Perplexity | Calls itself an answer engine; cites sources in every answer | Allow PerplexityBot and its IP ranges (Perplexity) |
| Microsoft Copilot Search | Mixes normal results with AI answers in Bing | Citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries show in Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report (Bing) |

How does an AI search engine work?
- It reads the question and often splits it into several searches. Google calls this query fan-out.
- It retrieves pages from its index or a live crawl.
- It writes an answer from those pages. This is called retrieval-augmented generation, or grounding.
- It shows some of the pages as citations.
Microsoft puts it this way: "AI Grounding covers using content as input to help inform AI-generated responses" (Bing, 30 October 2026). From 1 February 2027, Microsoft will honor separate preferences for AI grounding and AI training as it crawls.
Why do AI search engines matter for B2B SaaS?
They do not agree with each other. In Prefer's July 2026 test of 188 answers, only 5 of 713 cited domains appeared in all four engines, and about 75% were cited by just one. A brand that shows up in one engine can be absent from the next. Independent lists got 40% of the citations, vendors' own sites 34%.
How do you get found in AI search engines?
- Let each engine's search crawler in. Blocking a training crawler is a separate choice.
- Get indexed in both Google and Bing.
- Answer buyer questions clearly near the top of your pages.
- Be named on the third-party lists and reviews each engine cites for your category.
- Check each engine on its own, since results differ.
What does that look like? (example)
A hypothetical example: a payroll startup asks the same question, "best payroll software for remote teams", in four AI search engines. Perplexity names it, citing a comparison list. ChatGPT answers from memory and leaves it out. Google's AI Overview names three bigger tools. The team now knows which lists to work on first.
AI search engine vs answer engine
The terms overlap. Answer engine is the older, wider term for any tool that gives a direct answer. AI search engine stresses the AI-written summary. Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews fit both. For how to get named across them, see our guide to LLM SEO.
