What does an AEO tool actually do?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) means making your brand the one AI assistants name and cite. If the terms are new, our guide to SEO vs GEO vs AEO explains how they differ. A tracker shows you the answer. An AEO tool should also help with at least one of these five jobs:

  1. Prompt research: find the questions buyers ask assistants, with some idea of volume, the way keyword research works for Google.
  2. Content optimization: tell you what to add or rewrite on a page so it can be quoted, or write the draft for you.
  3. Citation gap analysis: show which outside pages the assistants cite for your prompts, and where competitors appear and you don't.
  4. AI-readiness audits: check whether AI crawlers can reach and read your pages (robots.txt, errors, structured data).
  5. Tracking: measure whether the fixes changed how often you are named.

Most tools started as trackers and are adding the other four jobs. Read the plan details: several features on vendor home pages are Enterprise only.

How did we rank these AEO tools?

We read each vendor's home and pricing pages on 1 November 2026. We did not run paid trials or test data accuracy. Five criteria, in order of weight:

  1. Optimization depth: does it tell you what to change, or make the change itself?
  2. Prompt research: does it show which prompts matter, with volume data?
  3. Citation data: which domains the assistants cite, and the gaps against competitors.
  4. Technical AI-readiness: crawler analytics, AI site audits, structured data checks.
  5. Access: a public price or free start, with these features on self-serve plans.

Which AEO tool should you pick?

  • You want the tool to write: AirOps or Profound. Both run agents that create and refresh pages.
  • You want a ranked list of fixes: Writesonic or HubSpot AEO. Check your plan includes the actions.
  • You worry AI bots can't read your site: Scrunch, Semrush or Otterly.AI. All three audit for AI crawler access.
  • You want to know where to get mentioned: Peec AI or AthenaHQ, for their source data.

For what tools, agencies and placements cost, see what GEO costs.

Are there free AEO tools?

Yes, for a first look. HubSpot's AEO Grader is a free, one-time report on how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini describe your brand. Otterly.AI lists free GEO tools on its site, including an AI Crawler Simulation and Query Fan Out. AthenaHQ's Essential plan and Profound's trial are free. The Schema.org Markup Validator tests your structured data.

Free tools give one snapshot. AI answers change between runs, so you need repeated checks to see a trend. Our LLM SEO guide shows how to run a prompt list by hand.

What can't AEO tools do for you?

AEO tools can fix your own pages. The catch is that assistants mostly quote other people's pages. In a Foundation and AirOps study of 5.1 million AI responses for 50 B2B brands, only 2.24% of citations on category questions went to the brand's own pages. A Prefer study of 188 answers found that 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists.

The tools know this. HubSpot AEO suggests contacting third-party sites, and Writesonic's Outreach Agent finds listicles that cite competitors. But a tool can only find the page and draft the email. Getting onto that page, and staying there, is a deal with the publisher.

No tool can promise an AI mention. The assistants decide what to cite.

Not an AEO tool: placements in the lists AI quotes

Rank Monthly is a different kind of product, so it sits in its own list and is not ranked against the tools above. It does not audit your pages. It books you into the third-party lists and LinkedIn posts the tools tell you to get into.

A different approach: placements on the pages AI cites

  1. 1. Rank Monthly

You add your website, Rank Monthly reads what you sell, scans competitors and finds the searches you want to show up for, and you set a budget. It books you into positions in list articles that already rank, new sponsored articles and LinkedIn posts. One ledger shows every placement, page visit, click and AI mention, month by month, with what was paid. It does not promise rankings or AI mentions: Google and the assistants decide.

    Good

    • Places you on third-party pages, which AEO tools don't
    • Pay monthly only while the spot is live, or once for a new post
    • Payment held until the placement is verified live
    • Publisher numbers come from connected Search Console and Analytics
    • Sponsored label and rel="sponsored" on by default; the publisher decides

    Watch out

    • Early access: no customers or results yet
    • Only publishers who joined are available
    • Not an AEO tool: no page audits or content agent
    • Not an agency
    • Pricing on request during early access

Checked How Rank Monthly works for brands

You can use both: an AEO tool to fix your site and find the cited pages, and placements to get onto them. To hand the whole job to people, see our GEO agencies for B2B SaaS.

Questions

What is an AEO tool?
An AEO (answer engine optimization) tool helps you get named and cited in AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Good ones research prompts, suggest or write content fixes, show which sources the assistants cite and audit whether AI crawlers can read your site.
What is the difference between an AEO tool and an AI visibility tracker?
A tracker measures how often AI assistants name your brand. An AEO tool also helps you change that, with content recommendations, prompt research, citation gap analysis or site audits for AI bots. Most AEO tools include tracking, so you can see whether a fix worked.
Which AEO tool is cheapest?
On 1 November 2026, Otterly.AI was the cheapest paid AEO tool we checked, at $29 a month for 15 prompts and 1,000 GEO URL audits. HubSpot AEO costs $50 a month. AthenaHQ has a free Essential plan. Prices change, so check the vendor's pricing page.
Do AEO tools help with schema markup?
Some do. Writesonic's site audit checks schema, robots.txt and indexing. Semrush has an AI Search Site Audit for issues that block AI bots. Most other tools on our list name no schema feature. To test structured data for free, use the Schema.org Markup Validator at validator.schema.org.
Can an AEO tool guarantee my brand appears in ChatGPT?
No. AI assistants decide what to cite, and the same prompt can return different answers on different runs. AEO tools can improve your pages and show where competitors are cited, but most citations on category questions go to pages the brand does not own.
