What does SERP mean?
SERP stands for search engine results page. Google calls the parts of that page visual elements: "the building blocks of the Google Search results page that a user can perceive or interact with" (Google Search Central, Visual Elements gallery, last updated 2026-02-04, read 1 November 2026).
SEO people use "SERP" for one search's results, and "SERP features" for everything that is not a plain link.
What is on a Google SERP?
| Element | What it is | Can you influence it? |
|---|---|---|
| Text result | The classic result: title link, snippet, site name | Yes, with normal SEO |
| Ads | Paid results, labeled "Sponsored" or "Ad" | Only by buying ads |
| AI Overview | An AI-written summary with links to sources | Indirectly: indexed pages that can show a snippet are eligible |
| Featured snippet | An excerpt from one page, shown first | Indirectly: Google picks the page |
| People Also Ask | Related questions that open to short answers | No, says Google; you can answer the questions |
| Rich result | A result with extras such as stars, often from structured data | Partly, with structured data |
| Image and video results | Results based on images or videos on a page | Yes, with image and video SEO |

Google says ads "will always be labeled with "Sponsored" or "Ad" and shown separately from search results" (Google, How Search works).
Why does the SERP matter for B2B SaaS?
Ranking first is only part of the story. An AI Overview, a featured snippet or a People Also Ask box can sit above you and answer the question. That is how zero-click searches happen.
The SERP also shows who holds your category. For many "best X software" searches, the top results are third-party list articles, not vendor sites. Those pages are often the ones AI answers cite as well. Check your own category before you plan content.
How do you read a SERP?
- Search the way your buyer would, signed out, in the country you sell to.
- Note which features show: AI Overview, ads, snippet, People Also Ask, videos.
- Note who holds the top ten results: vendors, lists, review sites, forums.
- If there is an AI Overview, note which pages it links to.
- Repeat on mobile and on another day. Results change.
Google says results can look different "depending on whether you're using a desktop computer or a phone, what country you're in, the language of your search query, and many other factors."
What does it look like? (hypothetical example)
A hypothetical example: the SERP for "best email marketing software for B2B" shows two ads, an AI Overview citing three list articles, a People Also Ask box, and then ten results. Seven are lists, two are vendors, one is a forum thread. A vendor reading this sees that getting into those lists matters as much as its own page.
SERP vs related terms
- Ranking is your position on the SERP. Visibility is whether people see you anywhere on it.
- An AI assistant such as ChatGPT has no SERP in this sense. It gives one answer with a few sources.
