What does sameAs mean?
schema.org defines sameAs as the "URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity" (schema.org, read 1 November 2026). Its value is a URL. It belongs to Thing, the most general type, so every schema.org type can use it: Organization, Person, Product and more.
Google's Organization documentation describes it in business terms: "The URL of a page on another website with additional information about your organization, if applicable" (Google Search Central, last updated 2026-09-08, read 1 November 2026). Google lists it as a recommended property, not a required one.
The two definitions differ in strictness. schema.org asks for pages that identify the item unambiguously. Google's wording is looser: a page with more information. The safe reading is the stricter one: link only to pages that are clearly about you.
Why does sameAs matter for B2B SaaS?
A search engine sees your website, a LinkedIn page, a Crunchbase profile and a G2 listing as four separate pages. sameAs says, in your own markup, that they describe one company. For a SaaS brand with a common name, that link helps systems avoid mixing you up with another company.
It is one of the plainest tools of entity SEO: you name your company and point to where else it exists.
How do you use sameAs?
- List the profiles you control or that are clearly about you: LinkedIn company page, Crunchbase, GitHub, YouTube, a Wikidata item if one exists.
- Add them as a sameAs array inside your Organization block, usually on the home page.
- Make the name, description and logo on those profiles match your site.
- Remove links when a profile is closed or no longer yours.
Example (hypothetical)
A hypothetical company, Acme Help Desk, has this in its home page JSON-LD: type Organization, name "Acme Help Desk", url https://acmehelpdesk.example, and a sameAs list with its LinkedIn company page, its Crunchbase profile and its Wikidata item. A competitor's review of Acme on a blog would not go in the list: that page is about Acme, but it is not a reference page for Acme's identity.
Does sameAs help with AI answers?
No provider we read says so directly. Google's guide to AI features says there is "no special schema.org structured data that you need to add" for AI Overviews or AI Mode. sameAs does not get you named in answers. What it does is connect your profiles, so the facts about you are consistent wherever an assistant finds them.
Assistants answer buyer questions largely from third-party pages, so being in those pages matters more than markup. See the LLM SEO guide.
sameAs vs related terms
- Organization schema is the block that usually holds sameAs.
- A knowledge graph stores entities and the links between them. sameAs is one way you suggest such a link.
- sameAs is not a backlink. It is markup in your own page, not a link in your content that readers see.
