What is Organization schema?

schema.org defines Organization as "An organization such as a school, NGO, corporation, club, etc." (schema.org, read 1 November 2026). Organization schema is that type written into your page as structured data, most often as JSON-LD.

Google says the markup on your home page can help it understand your organization's administrative details and "disambiguate your organization in search results" (Google Search Central, last updated 2026-09-08, read 1 November 2026). In plain words: it helps Google tell your company apart from others with a similar name.

Why does Organization schema matter for B2B SaaS?

Many SaaS names are common words, or close to another company's name. Search engines and AI assistants have to work out which company a page means. Organization schema states the facts in one machine-readable place: the legal name, the logo, the founding date and the profiles that belong to you.

Google also says some properties can influence what people see, such as which logo is shown in Search results and your knowledge panel. It does not promise either.

How do you add Organization schema?

  1. Put one Organization block on your home page or on one page that describes the company, such as an about page. Google says you do not need it on every page.
  2. Use the most specific type that fits. Google recommends the most specific schema.org subtype of Organization.
  3. Add the properties you can fill truthfully: name, legalName, url, logo, description, email, address, foundingDate.
  4. Add sameAs links to your official profiles on other sites.
  5. Test the page in Google's Rich Results Test and fix any critical errors.

Google lists no required properties: "There are no required properties; instead, we recommend adding as many properties that are relevant to your organization."

Example (hypothetical)

A hypothetical company, Acme Help Desk BV, adds one JSON-LD block to its home page. It gives the type Organization, the name "Acme Help Desk", the legal name "Acme Help Desk BV", the URL, a logo file, a one-sentence description, the founding year and an address. Its sameAs list holds the LinkedIn company page, the Crunchbase profile and the G2 listing. The same name and description appear on each of those profiles.

Does Organization schema help you appear in AI answers?

No source we read says it does directly. Google's guide to AI features says there is "no special schema.org structured data that you need to add" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI's crawler documentation does not mention structured data. So treat Organization schema as entity hygiene: it makes your company's basic facts clear and consistent, which is what any system needs before it can describe you.

What the assistants cite for buyer questions is often other people's pages. When Prefer checked 188 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude in July 2026, 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists. Your markup describes you; third-party lists decide whether you are named next to competitors. The LLM SEO guide covers both.

  • Schema markup is the general practice. Organization schema is one type of it.
  • sameAs is a property inside Organization schema that links to your other profiles.
  • Entity SEO is the wider work of making search engines understand your company as one clear thing. Organization schema is one step.
  • LocalBusiness is a subtype for businesses with a physical location. Google points local businesses to that type.

Google's general rule still applies: "Your structured data must be a true representation of the page content" (Google Search Central, read 1 November 2026).
