What is ItemList schema?

schema.org describes ItemList as a list of items of any sort, with examples like "Top 10 Movies About Weathermen" (schema.org, read 1 November 2026). It also warns not to confuse it with HTML lists, which are often only formatting.

The main properties are short:

  • itemListElement: the items. schema.org says they can be plain strings, existing entities, or ListItem entries.
  • position: set on each ListItem. schema.org notes that the order of elements in the markup does not show the list order, so position does.
  • itemListOrder: "Type of ordering (e.g. Ascending, Descending, Unordered)."
  • numberOfItems: "The number of items in an ItemList." For a list split over pages, it counts the whole list.

Does ItemList schema give you a rich result in Google?

Usually not for software lists. Google's carousel documentation says ItemList must be combined with one of four features: Course list, Movie, Recipe or Restaurant (Google Search Central, last updated 2026-09-08, read 1 November 2026). The page does not mention software products or plain list articles.

So a "best CRM tools" listicle with ItemList markup is valid schema.org, but Google documents no carousel for it. Google adds that it "does not guarantee that your structured data will show up in search results" (general guidelines, last updated 2026-07-10).

Why does ItemList schema matter for B2B SaaS?

Buyers build shortlists from ranked lists, and AI assistants cite them. When Prefer checked 188 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude in July 2026, 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists.

ItemList states the order and the names in the list in a form machines read without guessing. No assistant provider we read says it uses ItemList for citations. Google's guide to AI features says no special schema is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Treat it as clarity, not as a ranking lever. For publishers, the content of the list still does the work.

How do you add ItemList schema?

  1. Add one ItemList block in JSON-LD for the main ranked list on the page.
  2. Add one ListItem per entry, with position (starting at 1), name and the url of the product or its section.
  3. Keep the markup in the same order and with the same items as the visible list.
  4. Update the markup whenever entries move, join or leave the list.

Google's rule for all markup: "Don't mark up content that is not visible to readers of the page."

Example (hypothetical)

A hypothetical article, "7 best help desk tools for small teams", has a JSON-LD ItemList with numberOfItems 7. ListItem 1 has position 1, the name of the first tool and a link to its section on the page. ListItems 2 to 7 follow the same pattern, in the order readers see. When the publisher drops a tool, the markup drops it too.

  • A best-of list is the content. ItemList is the markup that describes it.
  • Schema markup and structured data are the wider practice; ItemList is one type.
  • An HTML ol or ul list is formatting. ItemList is a statement about what the list contains.
