What is topical authority?

In SEO, topical authority means depth on one subject. A site that answers many questions about a subject, links those pages together and is cited by others on it is said to have topical authority. The term has two meanings, and they are not the same.

What does Google mean by topic authority?

Google uses the name for one specific system. In May 2023 it described "a system called topic authority that helps determine which expert sources are helpful to someone's newsy query in certain specialized topic areas, such as health, politics, or finance" (Google Search Central blog, 23 May 2023, read 1 November 2026). Google named three prominent signals:

  • How notable a source is for a topic or location.
  • Influence and original reporting: how often other publishers cite a source's original work.
  • Source reputation: a history of high-quality reporting, or recommendations from expert sources.

That system is about news. We found no Google page that describes a general topical authority score for every site. The wider SEO use is an industry idea built on Google's quality guidance, not a Google system with that name. So if a tool shows you a "topical authority score", that is the tool's own metric.

Google's general guidance points the same way, without the label. It asks: "Is this content written or reviewed by an expert or enthusiast who demonstrably knows the topic well?" It also warns against writing on a niche topic "without any real expertise, but instead mainly because you thought you'd get search traffic" (Google Search Central, last updated 5 October 2026).

Why does topical authority matter for B2B SaaS?

Many SaaS blogs publish on anything near their product: hiring, productivity, AI news. Each post may get some traffic, but the site is not clearly known for one thing. A focused set of pages on the problem your product solves is easier for readers, search engines and AI assistants to place. It also fits the E-E-A-T idea of being a go-to source.

For Google's AI features the rules are the same as for Search: "no additional requirements" apply (Google Search Central, last updated 10 December 2025).

How do you build topical authority?

  1. Pick one subject your buyers ask about, close to what you sell.
  2. List the questions they ask, from sales calls, support tickets and Search Console.
  3. Write one page per question, with the answer first.
  4. Link each page to a central guide and to its closest neighbors.
  5. Add original research: data or tests that only you have.
  6. Describe your company the same way everywhere, so search engines see one clear entity. See entity SEO.
  7. Earn mentions and citations from other sites on the same subject.

What does topical authority look like? (hypothetical example)

This example is hypothetical. A SaaS company sells software for usage-based billing. Its blog has 40 posts on general startup topics. It replaces them, over six months, with 25 pages on billing: pricing models, invoicing rules by country, revenue recognition, and a yearly survey of 300 finance leads. Each page links to a billing guide. Other finance blogs start to quote the survey. The site is now clearly about billing.

How does topical authority relate to E-E-A-T, entity SEO and SEO?

  • Search engine optimization is the whole practice. Topical authority is one strategy inside it.
  • E-E-A-T is about the page and its creator. Topical authority is about the site's coverage of a subject.
  • Entity SEO is about being understood as one clear thing (a company, a product, a person). Topical authority is about what that entity is known for.

How does topical authority connect to third-party lists and AI citations?

Depth on your own site is half the picture. AI assistants cite other people's pages often. When Prefer checked 188 answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude in July 2026, 40% of the sources cited for buyer questions were independent lists, and vendors' own sites got 34%. A brand that is covered in the lists and guides of its field is part of that field's sources too. See SEO vs GEO vs AEO for how these channels fit together.
